PCP’s Doral expresses “deep regret” over the death of Margarida Tengarrinha

The Secretariat of the Algarve Regional Organization of the Portuguese Communist Party today expressed its “deep regret” at the death of Margarida Tengarrinha, which took place this Thursday, October 26th.

Born on May 7, 1928 in Portimão, Maria Margarida Carmo Tengarrinha, from a young age, participated in the student struggles of 1949 and 1954 in Lisbon, having been a member of the University Board of MUD Juvenil, recalls Doral do PCP in her note sent to the newsrooms .

She participated in the General Exhibitions of Fine Arts, having been expelled from the Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa – ESBAL, for the role she played in leading the fight for Peace during the NATO meeting in Lisbon in 1952.

She participated in the World Congress of Women held in Copenhagen in 1953 and in 1963 in Moscow.

She joined the Portuguese Communist Party, aged 24, in 1952. Margarida Tengarrinha went underground at the end of 1954. Her first task was then to create, with José Dias Coelho (her partner), the “workshop” for producing documents of identification and others necessary for the Party's clandestine intervention.

In 1962, after the murder of José Dias Coelho, Margarida Tengarrinha went abroad and worked at «Rádio Portugal Livre». In 1968 she returned to Portugal, having participated in the writing of «Avante!» and the newspaper «A Terra». She was responsible for the Peasant Labor organizations of the Northern Organization and later of Lisbon.

Member of the Central Committee of the PCP from May 1974 to 1988. After April 25, 1974, he was a member of the Board of the Lisbon Regional Organization, a member of the Committee for Work with Small and Medium-sized Farmers and the Committee for Agrarian Reform. Living in Portimão since 1986, he was part of the Board of the Algarve Regional Organization of the PCP.

She was a member of the Assembly of the Republic in the III and IV legislatures.

Over the years, Margarida Tengarrinha published several books about painting, popular culture and about her experience and intervention as a PCP employee. She also has a vast work of plastic arts. She was a professor at the Senior University of Portimão where she taught History of Arts.

Margarida Tengarrinha's body will be in a burning chamber at the Mortuary House of the Colégio Church in Portimão, on Tuesday, October 31st, from 9:30 am, leaving at 12:30 pm for the Albufeira crematorium. Cremation will take place at 14pm.
