Loulé: Today there is a nocturnal geological route in Rocha da Pena

Registration is free

The Geological Trail at Rocha da Pena will mark the start of the European Heritage Days in Loulé, this Friday, September 1st.

The Municipal Museum is associated with yet another edition of these Journeys, this year under the theme “Living Heritage”, which will take place from the 22nd to the 24th of September.

However, in this municipality, the program starts this Friday, September 1st, with a geological route in Rocha da Pena.

The night walk in this natural monument is an activity of moderate difficulty and starts at 21:00. The objective is to «explore the geological wonders of this place, which bear witness to the long evolution of the Algarve from a time before dinosaurs to the present day», says the Municipality, making reference to the fossils of Metoposaurus algarvensis, the “giant salamander” of the Algarve, a species only found in this territory.

The walk, guided by paleontologist Hugo Campos and geologist Gonçalo Maurício, is aimed at participants aged at least 14 years.

Entries are free, by prior appointment to [email protected] /289 400 885/289 400 611.

The meeting point will be at Fonte dos Amuados (Bar das Grutas – Coordinates – 37.25030, -8.09797).

Throughout the month of September, other activities included in these Days are planned, including the guided tour “Journey to the past: From the Hammam of Al-`Ulyà to the manor house of Barreto” (September 21, 18 pm), Conference “Archaeological finds and shipwrecks in the Sea of Quarteira”, by Pedro Barros (September 00, 23 pm, Quarteira Municipality Center) followed by a commented visit to the exhibition “With Feet on Earth and Hands in the Sea – 18 Years of the History of Quarteira” (30 pm) and Moonlight Heritage “Mar Jurássico da Tôr” (September 6000, 19:30).

The theme “Living Heritage” celebrates the practices and ways in which the past is preserved in collective memory and transmitted from generation to generation.

These Days challenge reflection on the responses to be given to the challenges posed by society.

The European Heritage Days are a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission, constituting the most widely celebrated and shared cultural event by the citizens of Europe.
