Helicopter rescues surfer from isolated rocky area on the coast of Aljezur

He got stuck in a pile, with broken equipment, but physically well.

A 65-year-old American surfer was rescued this morning by a Portuguese Air Force helicopter, after being isolated in a rocky area while surfing between Monte Clérigo beach and Amoreira beach, on the coast of Aljezur.

The alert was received at 11:30 am, through the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisboa), with members of the Lagos Maritime Police, the “SeaWatch” Project, the Aljezur Volunteer Firefighters and also the FAP helicopter.

Noting that the surfer's equipment was broken, leaving him unable to return to land' and the area being 'difficult to access', the rescue had to be carried out using the helicopter.

«As he was physically well, the victim did not require medical assistance, having left the place by his own means», says the National Maritime Authority.

The local command of the Maritime Police of Lagos took care of the incident.
