Roundabouts where the lawn has been replaced by native species and a system for reusing water from the municipal swimming pool for urban cleaning and irrigation. The Secretary of State for the Environment was, on Tuesday, August 1st, in São Brás de Alportel, where he learned about some of the water efficiency measures that the Municipality has been implementing.

The gardens in these roundabouts had a water consumption of about 500 cubic meters (m3) per month, but currently do not require any watering, as they are formed by adapted species.

The measure involved an investment of 37 euros financed by the Economic and Social Stabilization Program (PEES).

The municipal executive also showed the pool water reuse system for urban cleaning and irrigation, a measure implemented with an investment of close to 27 thousand euros, financed by PEES, and which allows an average reuse value of 8 to 9 cubic meters per day. At the end of a year, this represents 3100 m3 of water that is reused.

Hugo Pires, Secretary of State, stressed the importance of measures like this one, because “it makes no sense that gardens or streets are still watered with the same water we wash our teeth with”.

The visit also made it possible to learn about the renovation work on the water supply network at the Vilarinhos site, over an extension of 1840 meters, a project carried out this year, within the scope of the First Notice of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) .

This work involved an investment of 120 euros and made it possible to reduce night flows in that area from 20 m3/h to 2m3/h, which translates into an annual saving of 150 m3 of water.

For Hugo Pires, this «type of measure is extremely important».

«It is with great pleasure that I came to witness the effort that the Municipality is making to save water, thinking about a sustainable territory and future generations», he said.

For Vítor Guerreiro, mayor of São Brás de Alportel, it was also important “to make the Government aware of the work done”.

«Saving water and reusing it is one of our priorities. We all have to make our systems more efficient, we have to take measures to save and reuse», he also said.

The mayor emphasized the fact that the Municipality is investing "a lot" in the area of water efficiency, with the support of "funds from the Recovery and Resilience Plan", for example, in the "replacement of many obsolete pipelines".

«The use of grass, for example, must be done with great care in our region. It is up to each one of us to set an example and reduce consumption », he concluded.
