Music and cinema give life to the Hermitage of Guadalupe and the Fortress of Sagres

On the 12th and 26st of August

A recital of lyrical singing and accordion at the Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe and a film session, from the cycle “Libertar a Memória”, at Fortaleza de Sagres, both in Vila do Bispo, are the suggestions of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve for the 12th and 26th of August, respectively.

For Saturday, the 12th, at 17 pm, at the Ermida de Guadalupe, an accordion and lyrical singing recital is scheduled, with the musician Gonçalo Pescada and the soprano Carla Pontes.

The musicians will perform works by composers such as JS Bach, Caccini, Gershwin and Astor Piazzolla, also including works by Portuguese composers Zeca Afonso, Ferrer Trindade, Frederico Valério and Carlos Paredes.

Admission is free, prior reservation is required via email [email protected] or mobile phone 919518292.

On the 26th, at 17 pm, the Fortress of Sagres will host the third session of the film cycle “Libertar a Memória”, promoted by the Cineclube de Faro and curated by Suzano Cista, where the film I Am Not Your Negro (2016, France/USA, DOC, 1h33min M/12), by director Raoul Peck, will be shown.

This session aims to mark the International Day in Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition (August 23).

«The documentary by Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck was made based on the unfinished book Remember This House, by writer James Baldwin (1924 - 1987), and portrays racial conflicts in the United States of America, from the murder of three of the main black leaders of history: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King», describes the Algarve Regional Directorate of Culture.

The “Freeing Memory” cycle addresses issues such as (de)colonization, slavery, social segregation, places and identities, in a plurality of perspectives and visions. The guest curators, although with different personal and professional paths, have in common the direct or family origin of territories affected by colonization and are linked together by the study, thought, culture and action in themes of memory and post-colonialism and its consequences still gifts. The project is artistically coordinated and curated by Luísa Baptista and technically produced by Pedro Mesquita.

To complement the exhibitions, some publications will be available with literary curatorship by Marta Tecla and the Buala project.

Admission is free, subject to prior registration to the email [email protected].

The cinema cycle integrates the program of DiVaM – Dynamization and Valorization of Monuments.
