Call for blood donation, with reservations for groups A and O for two days only

All citizens over 18 years old, weighing more than 50 kilos and who are healthy can be donors

The blood reserves of blood groups A and O positive and negative are only enough for two days, warned today the Portuguese Institute of Blood and Transplantation (IPST) and the federation of donors, who are calling for donations.

A statement from the Portuguese Federation of Benevolent Blood Donors (Fepodabes) echoes an appeal today from the IPST, which in a publication on its official account on the social network Facebook called for urgent donations in view of the shortage of reserves.

“Blood reserves for A and O positive and negative blood groups are currently two days old. The weather conditions of the last few days have caused a slowdown in the influx of blood donors, so we ask donors of these blood groups who are in a position to make a new donation to do so as soon as possible”, in the centers of Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra do IPST or another convenient collection point for donors, reads in the Facebook post.

Fepodabes recalls that “the summer period is traditionally more complicated” to keep “blood stocks at satisfactory levels, as the holiday period, accompanied by high temperatures, contributes to a lower influx of donors in collection sites”.

“In the case of the Lisbon area, the beginning of August, with the restrictions inherent to holding the World Youth Day, contributed to an exacerbation of the difficulties that are already usual in this period”, the donor federation also said in the statement.

The federation recalls that all citizens over 18 years old, weighing more than 50 kilos and who are healthy can be donors.
