Air transport at historic highs in May

INE says there was a year-on-year increase of 15,2% and 10,7% above May 2019

National airports handled 6,2 million passengers in May, a year-on-year increase of 15,2% and 10,7% above May 2019, before the pandemic, the National Statistics Institute (INE) announced today.

«Since the beginning of 2023, there have been historical maximums in the monthly values ​​of passengers at national airports», highlights the INE in the “Fast Statistics of Air Transport” for May.

In the month under review, there was an average daily disembarkation of around 100 thousand passengers at national airports, a value higher than that recorded in May 2022 (87,1 thousand; +15,0%) and 10,6% above the verified in May 2019 (90,6 thousand).

According to INE, 82,3% of passengers disembarking at national airports corresponded to international traffic, reaching 2,6 million passengers, mostly from the European continent (70,1% of the total), an increase of 14,0% compared to to May 2022.

The American continent was the second main origin, concentrating 8,6% of all disembarked passengers.

With regard to boarded passengers, 81,9% corresponded to international traffic, making a total of 2,5 million, with the main destination being airports on the European continent (71,2% of the total), registering a growth of 14,3% compared to May 2022.

Airports on the American continent were the second main destination for departing passengers (7,6% of the total).

From January to May, the number of passengers handled at national airports increased by 33,6% compared to the same period in 2022 and 13,0% compared to 2019.

Lisbon airport handled 51,8% of total passengers (12,9 million), having grown by 36,9% when compared to the same period of 2022 (+10,1% compared to the same period of 2019).

Porto airport concentrated 22,7% of total passengers handled and increased 32,0% (+14,5% compared to the same period in 2019), while Porto airport Faro registered a growth of 24,0% (+6,2% compared to the same period of 2019).

Considering the volume of disembarked and departed passengers on international flights between January and May 2023, the United Kingdom surpassed France and emerged as the main country of origin for flights, with a growth of 28,2% compared to the same period in 2022.

France occupied the second position and recorded an increase of 24,9%, but remained the main destination country for flights, followed by the United Kingdom.

Spain, on the other hand, occupied the third position as the main country of origin and destination.

With regard to the movement of cargo and mail, it retreated 3,0% in May in year-on-year terms, to 19,1 thousand tons, 5,1% above May 2019.

In the first five months of the year, it registered a slight decrease, of 0,6%, and, compared to the same period of 2019, it increased by 9,5%.
