9th grade students worsen Mathematics and improve Portuguese

Data from the national exams were made available today by the National Examinations Jury.

The 9th grade students obtained better results this year in the Portuguese national tests, but their performance in the Mathematics exam was worse, when compared with the colleagues who took them last year.

In Portugal, the average classification of the 1st phase of the final cycle tests held this year was 61%, while last year it was 55%, according to data made available today by the National Examinations Jury.

In Mathematics, there was a slight decrease in the national average, which went from 45% to 43%, both negative averages.

In the Portuguese test, about 78,2% of the students managed to pass, while in Mathematics (92), most students (58%) passed.

However, the average for Mathematics reveals greater dispersion of scores (standard deviation of 27), in relation to Portuguese (standard deviation of 16).

For example, in Mathematics, there were many more students with zero values (3.131), but also many more with 20 values (726), while in Portuguese, only eight students had zero and only 57 had the maximum score.

Almost 200 final tests of the 3rd cycle were held in 1217 schools, with 57 teaching establishments taking the tests electronically.

The final Portuguese electronic cycle test was taken by 3.481 students and the Mathematics test by 3.005 students.

Due to the reduced number of students, the tests of Portuguese as a Non-Mother Language and Portuguese as a Second Language took place in all schools and for all students in digital format.

“Overall, this pilot was carried out by 6.622 students”, advances the tutelage in a statement.

The tests were corrected by 4.242 teachers, but involved around ten thousand supervisory teachers who belonged to the schools' exam secretariats.
