Algarve took “its” Mediterranean Diet to Seville to «whet up the appetite of the Spanish neighbors»

The Câmara de Tavira, challenged by the CCDR, held a Mediterranean Diet Exhibition at the Consulate of Portugal in Seville

Representatives of various entities, artisans and even artists traveled from the Algarve to Seville on Wednesday, the 28th, to «whet our Spanish neighbours' appetite» for the Mediterranean Diet and the Fair that celebrates it, taking the opportunity to leave an invitation to the population place for you to travel to the Algarve region and enjoy its gastronomy and culture.

The Council of Tavira, at the invitation of the Coordination and Regional Development Commission (CCDR) of the Algarve and the Consulate of Portugal in Seville, held a Mediterranean Diet Exhibition at this consular unit, which culminated in a seminar where the Mediterranean Diet was discussed, whether gave to taste their flavors and their knowledge was shown.

This “incursion” by Tavira – which is the representative community of the candidacy that culminated in the recognition of the Portuguese Mediterranean Diet as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity – to Sevillian lands aimed, above all, at trying to attract even more Spaniards to the region, namely to the Feira da Dieta Mediterranean, which will take place between the 7th and 10th of September, in this city.

«We came here to leave the bug to have more visitors on this side of the border. We already have many, but we want more», he summarized to Sul Informação Ana Paula Martins, mayor of Tavira, on the sidelines of the session that took place in Seville, on the 28th of June.

«We always have Spanish artists in the programming of the Mediterranean Diet Fair. The idea is, exactly, that the event can also be attractive to our Spanish neighbors », he added.

After «the challenge made by CCDR do Algarve to come here to hold this exhibition of the Mediterranean Diet, we understood that it would be an interesting space to present the fair and its attractions».

«We originally came on the 8th of June and left here the traveling exhibition of the Mediterranean Diet and some leaflets about Tavira. The TASA project left the handicraft part. Today we came to do this seminar, to talk a little more about the diet, from a more institutional perspective, but we also brought artisans, who will be working live, as well as the accordion», concluded Ana Paula Martins.

The action also included a wine tasting, accompanied by delicacies made with local products from the Algarve, in accordance with the rules of the Mediterranean Diet.

Cláudia Boesch, consul of Portugal in Seville and host of the session, assured the Sul Informação that the interest of the Spaniards in what is happening on this side of the border is great.

«The Andalusians, from what I've come to understand, despite having only been here since September, are very open to everything that concerns Portugal: they love our country, our culture, the food... Saturday to go to Portugal for lunch. They also like everything that is fair, such as the Mediterranean Diet, those that are made there in Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA), Contrabando and others», said the Portuguese diplomat.

The consul was available to host more actions of this nature, not least because it is part of its competences «to promote the Portugal brand and our products. Whenever we are asked to open the consulate for this type of initiative, we are open to doing so».

The CCDR, the Regional Directorates for Culture and Agriculture and Fisheries, the University of the Algarve, In Loco, the Câmara de Tavira and the VRSA School of Hospitality and Tourism were represented at last Wednesday's initiative.
