New book by César Correia tells the story of “São Brás de Alportel – Land of Corkworkers”

The launch session took place at the Museu do Traje

The book “São Brás de Alportel – Terra de Corticeiros”, by César Correia, a former referee and businessman in the cork sector, was presented on 2 June, as part of the commemorative program for the 109th anniversary of the Municipality.

The launch session took place at the Museu do Traje, precisely the house built by Miguel Dias de Andrade, one of the most important pioneers in the cork industry.

By flipping through the pages of this book, the reader is invited to travel back in time, through the memories, texts and documents that César Correia collected over many decades, with the aim of perpetuating the memory of São Paulo cork workers.

Proud to see this work integrate the list of works published by the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel, the Mayor, Vitor Guerreiro, described this book as “a treasure that is the guardian of our history” and that recalls the importance that cork has had in the independence of São Brás de Alportel from the municipality of Faro as well as in the development of the municipality.

«We should all be grateful to César Correia for transmitting these stories to the new generations», he underlined.

The book is on sale for 17,5 euros at the Town Hall and at the Municipal Library.

Born on April 1, 1935, César da Luz Correia started as a referee in the 1959/60 season and reached the international in 1973/74. He ended his career on November 20, 1982, after 23 years of activity, nine of which as an international.

Still in the field of sports, he was head of the Refereeing Council of the Algarve Football Association (which he was president between 1984 and 1986) and of the Portuguese Football Federation and also of the Portuguese Football Referees Association, performing various functions in the sector until 2010, as UEFA delegate or technical refereeing coordinator in the Portuguese Professional Football League.

César Correia received, in 1982, the Medal of Good Sports Services, awarded by the Government, and, among other honors, he was distinguished twice by the Algarve Football Association: in 1995, as a Merit Partner, and in 2010 for having reached 50 years of dedication to the cause of arbitration. He is also a Merit Member of the Portuguese Football Federation (2014).

He also became famous as a businessman, heading the company Nova Cortiça, from São Brás de Alportel.
