CHUA says it will always be available to receive students from the Faculty of Medicine

«Being certain that the accreditation of the UAlg Medical Course depends mainly on the action of the Faculty of Medicine, the CHUA will not fail to contribute its part»

The Board of Directors of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA) says that it «has always been, and will be» available to receive students from the Faculty of Medicine and that its «teaching capacity is well evident in requests from multiple national and foreign institutions» . This position follows the dismissal of Isabel Palmeirim, former director of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Algarve (UAlg).

This dismissal, first reported by the Sul Informação, was based on the bad relationship that exists between the organic unit and the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve.

Speaking to our newspaper, Isabel Palmeirim, in addition to saying that the CHUA «has not changed its attitude», complained that the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve continues to «not proceed with the accreditation of services», which has «a very negative in the medical course, leading students to have to go to other hospitals».

In a statement sent to the newsrooms, the Board of Directors, which does not comment on the resignation itself, says that «it has always been, and will be, receptive to welcoming all the students that the Faculty of Medicine chooses to place here, all the more so as we believe that sending of students to other regions undermines local institutional interests».

«CHUA will do everything to fulfill its commitments to medical education, either through the sustained growth and differentiation of its clinical staff, or through continuous quality improvement, a chapter that includes the expansion of existing and ongoing certification processes», reads in the same communiqué.

«Being certain that the accreditation of the UAlg Medicine Course depends mainly on the action of the Faculty of Medicine, the CHUA will not fail to contribute its part», he adds.

With regard to teaching capacity, the CHUA considers that «it is very evident in the requests from multiple national and foreign institutions for us to welcome their students. CHUA's scientific activity is also solid, demonstrated in the annual report of the Department of Education, Innovation and Research, whose data will be released shortly».

As for the relationship with the UAlg, CHUA believes that «it will be possible to continue, in the short term, the healthy and fruitful dialogue with the University of the Algarve, which we have always defended, which, we believe, is of mutual and regional interest» .

"The CHUA Board of Directors will dialogue with any interlocutors that the UAlg appoints, with a view to strengthening cooperation in medical education, as well as for the pursuit of any common field of action", concludes the statement.
