Vila Real de Santo António celebrates the centenary of its farol

O farol of VRSA has a tower of 46 meters and a range of 48 kilometers

O Farol of Vila Real de Santo António completes 100 years next Friday, January 20th, and, to mark this historic date, there will be visits, a gathering, an exhibition and even padel and sailing tournaments.

O Farol will be open to the general public until Thursday, the 19th, during the afternoon. Visits will be divided into three groups: 14:00 pm, 15:00 pm and 16:00 pm and registration must be done in person upon arrival at the site.

On Thursday, the 19th, the memories of farol will be discussed in a historical gathering entitled “Memories of the Farol of VRSA: Chatting with Fernando Pessanha, Neto Gomes and José Cruz”, at 18 pm, at the Municipal Historical Archive António Rosa Mendes.

On the 20th, the Associação ¼ Escuro – Association of Amateur Photographers of VRSA and the City Council of VRSA will launch to the population the photographic challenge “100 years of Farol de VRSA", with the aim of continuing to immortalize the public's perspective on the farol.

Sport is also part of these celebrations through the organization of the «Open de Padel Centenario do Farol de VRSA», on the 21st, at 9:00 am, at the Padel Clube VRSA.

The Associação Naval do Guadiana will also participate in the activities with the organization of the «Sailing Regatta Centenário do Farol of VRSA», on the 28th.

The sporting event, consisting of four light sailing regattas, in the Optimist and Laser classes, is scheduled to start at 11:00 am.

As part of the celebrations for the Day of the City of VRSA, in May, there will also be a chronological, temporary and evocative exhibition that will include photographs, videos and some pieces from the assets of the Portuguese Navy, as well as the issue of an Entire Postcard with Commemorative Stamp .

The centenary celebrations of the Farol show their symbolism through the dissemination of culture, the profession of faroshipyard and the history of lighthouses and highlight the importance of this infrastructure as operational equipment for the General Directorate of the Maritime Authority.

The celebrations are the result of a partnership between the General Directorate of the Maritime Authority and the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António.
