School of Hospitality and Tourism spreads solidarity at Christmas (and beyond)

Solidarity is a word that is present in the program of this school

A collection of goods from the school community, to deliver to the D. Francisco Gomes Institute (Casa dos Rapazes), in Faro, and a “Solidarity Tea”, in which students from the School of Hospitality and Tourism of the Algarve (EHTA) cooked for the users of a nursing home, are two solidarity gestures from this school, which serve to celebrate Christmas.

This Christmas, users of the Cultural and Social Center of the Parish of Santa Bárbara de Nexe were visited by students from the 1st semester Tourism Management course and 1st year Restaurant/Bar Technician.

«The visit included a snack, made by the students, and a lot of conviviality and sharing of experiences between young people and this older population», according to the EHTA.

On the other hand, the collection of food, hygiene products, warm clothes and sports material is still ongoing, which will be delivered in January to the D. Francisco Gomes Institute (Casa dos Rapazes), the entity chosen to receive the result of the union efforts of the entire EHTA community in 2022.

Solidarity gestures are not only for the outside, but also for the school community.

«This Christmas, among students with financial difficulties, several Christmas baskets made with school products and with food and hygiene goods offered by employees and employees were raffled», according to the Algarve hotel school.

For Paula Vicnete, director of the EHTA, “raising young people's awareness of the world around them is very important and the EHTA seeks to set an example. Throughout the year we help others, within our possibilities, and during the Christmas season this help is even more expressive. We are training young people to be future professionals, but we also want to train good people, with a sense of solidarity, humility and empathy».

Throughout the school year, «there are countless Social Solidarity Institutions that have the support of the EHTA, support provided in different ways: provision of spaces, delivery of goods and food, fundraising campaigns and promotion of moments of interaction between generations », according to the EHTA.

Every month, «more than two hundred» ready-to-eat meals leave this establishment and «end up in the homes of close to 500 people, through the food support guaranteed by Refood Faro».

«The School of Hospitality and Tourism of the Algarve is fundamental in helping more than fifty people, in a total of more than 200 families. Especially since they are foods that come to us already prepared. When the school is closed for the holidays, we really miss this support», Paula Matias, coordinator of the Faro from Refood.
