The Portimão City Council is in negotiations with the owners of the old Alfagar building, which has been closed for years, to “install the Registry and Notary Services in the center of the city”. The announcement was made by Isilda Gomes, during the City Day speech, which was celebrated on December 11th.

The mayor also spoke of other projects and investments by the municipality, which can only advance thanks to the financial sustainability of the municipality. Now, also at this level, the mayor shared good news, guaranteeing that «financial sustainability allows us to write off 10 million euros of the debt to the FAM, just as it allows us to look with optimism to the near future, because it is possible that we will get out of the situation of excessive deficit already at the end of 2024, guaranteeing us much greater budgetary autonomy».

As for the projects, Isilda Gomes referred to the Portimão Sustainable Mobility Plan, which «was in public discussion» which ended on December 10, and «will soon be implemented».

Among the planned improvements to the road network, the mayor revealed that “a tender will be launched shortly for the construction of the V10, which will connect Penina to the Montes de Alvor, as well as a new road that will connect the Hospital to the Portimão Arena”.

«With an equally remarkable impact, traffic in downtown Portimão will undergo a profound change with the construction of a new street that will connect to Largo do Dique», he added.

In the field of Housing, «identified as one of the biggest problems that afflict the Algarve, and Portimão», the mayor said that «the construction of 227 fires at controlled costs in Vale Lagar, of 25 apartments on Avenida 25 de Abril and 250 fires at Coca Maravilhas, on an affordable income basis».

But it is also thanks to sustainability, that the rehabilitation of the José Buisel School was recently concluded and that the municipality opened «a new tender for the creation of the Youth Park, a work that we are very fond of and that is just not moving forward because the previous tender was deserted ».

As in the case of Parque da Juventude, and for the same reason, he added, «we have also opened a tender for the construction of Jardim do Mercado, in the hope that it will go ahead soon».

The «so coveted» new kennel is already under construction, while, after the recovery of the old Auction Market, «we will launch a tender with a view to the recovery of yet another historic building in Portimon, in this case the Municipal Auditorium».

To ensure safety in the public space, the video surveillance system is already working at the main entrances to Portimão and Praia da Rocha, said Isilda Gomes.

«In order to open new paths and diversify the future of Portimão, we have expressed our availability to give land to the University of Algarve for the construction of a campus for three thousand students», recalled the mayor.

«Our aim is to reinforce Portimão as a university destination, attracting young people and professors who will live their lives here, participate in our local economy, and many will stay here to fulfill their destiny», he stressed.
