Farense was thrashed by 6-0 against Sporting, in a match for the 1st round of group B of the Football League Cup, played this Wednesday, November 30, at Estádio José Alvalade, in Lisbon.
The Algarve started the game badly: to give you an idea, in the first six minutes, Sporting already had six shots…
Vasco Faísca had warned that Farense would find an «extremely difficult» team and, unfortunately for the Algarve team, the predictions were right on target.
The team of Faro, who had strong support in the stands, was always very permeable in defence.
The first goal came in the 20th minute. Trincão made a low cross for Paulinho who shot, inside the area, to the back of the net.
Still barely recovering from the goal, Farense suffered again and again by Paulinho who, after a first shot saved by Ricardo Velho, made it 2-0 (23').
Farense managed to balance the match a little – and even had, at 33', a good move to reduce it, but Rui Costa's shot went a little wide of Franco Israel's goal.
Who scored again was Sporting, through Marcus Edwards, in the 39th minute, in a move in which he took an opponent out of the way and, dropped to the right, shot without chances for the Algarve goalkeeper.
The second half started… with another goal from Sporting. Pedro Porro crossed and Pote, inside the area, shot close to the first post (48').
Farense never managed to show, in this match, the reason why they are fighting to climb to the I Liga: it was a bad game for the Algarve.
The lions' fifth goal came at the 75th minute. Paulinho unmarked himself, ran towards the goal, took an opponent out of the way and passed to Arthur Gomes who just had to touch it.
The night was truly one to forget for Farense. In the 84th minute, young Algarve player Mateus Fernandes won a penalty that he converted himself, making his debut for Sporting.
With this heavy defeat, by 6-0, the Algarve are in the last place of group B of the Taça da Liga. In the next round, Farense will receive Marítimo, on the 7th, at 18:30.
