Tavira integrates Portuguese Network of Healthy Municipalities

With the Physical Activity Promotion Plan

Tavira becomes part of the Portuguese Network of Healthy Municipalities, due to the Physical Activity Promotion Plan – Todos em Movimento, and marks its anniversary with the hoisting of the 25th anniversary commemorative flag.

«With the aim of promoting healthy living habits and the practice of sports in the community», the municipality celebrated with a set of local associations – such as Casa do Povo de Santo Estêvão, Clube de Vela de Tavira, Clube Bike Team Tavira, Ria – Aqua Clube Tavira and Tavira Natação Clube – another partnership with a view to implementing the Plan for the Promotion of Physical Activity in the Municipality of Tavira – Todos em Movimento, which runs between October 2022 and June 2023.

The Plan, which involves an investment of more than 140 euros, «aims to respond to the guidelines established in the National Strategy for the Promotion of Physical Activity, Health and Well-Being», emphasizes the municipality.

In this sense, and in order to coordinate all projects and provide advice and referrals to the population, the Municipal Office for the Promotion of Physical Activity in the Municipality is available, in the Municipal Pavilion Dr. Eduardo Mansinho.

The projects, free of charge and diversified, cover audiences with different age groups.

“Crescer em Movimento” is aimed at children and young people, from preschool to 18 years old. “Põe-te a Mexer”, for adults between 18 and 55 years old, includes the projects Gimnasticando (biweekly classes in maintenance gymnastics and aerobics), Adapted Physical Activity (citizens with some type of disability) and XutosN'Bola (groups futsal games).

The “Viva +”, with adults over 55 years old, includes ActiveSenior (biweekly maintenance and gerontomotricity gymnastics classes administered at Homes and Day Centers in the municipality) and Hidro Sénior (water aerobics activities at the Municipal Swimming Pools).

“Physical Activity and Health” is for special populations associated with health needs and includes the Adapted Physical Activity projects (work developed with the Irene Rolo Foundation that consists of the practice of aquatic activities, physical-motor expression and Boccia) and GATO (project in collaboration with the Aid Group for Drug Addicts).

In partnership with ACES do Sotavento are the projects "Diabetes em Movimento" (three weekly sessions of physical exercise), "Proximity Respiratory Rehabilitation Program" (developed in partnership with the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve and the Municipality of Tavira with a view to improving the quality of life of people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and Combating Obesity (assessment, monitoring and referral of users, from the age of three, to different physical activity projects).

The “Todos a Caminhar” and “Tavira conVid'a a Pedalar” initiatives are transversal to all programmes. The first project consists of weekly running marches, the second of guided MTB bike rides, both on a pre-defined calendar that encompasses all the parishes in the county.

Included in the “Crescer em Movimento” program, for ages between 3 and 17, are the “Infantários em Movimento” projects, for kindergarten and pre-school students, “Move-te na Escola”, “Move-te na Escola”, for students of the 1st cycle of the municipality and “Desportiv@mente”, aimed at children and young people sheltered in social solidarity institutions in the municipality.

By promoting this Plan, the municipality intends, together with the different partner entities, “to lower the levels of physical inactivity, throughout the life cycle, and to provide a diversified and free sports offer”.
