Café Calcinha already has interested parties and will reopen «until Christmas»

Whoever stays to explore Calcinha, must also present a cultural program

Café Calcinha, an emblematic space in the city of Loulé that has been closed for months, will “reopen until Christmas”, predicts the City Council.

The novelty was announced this Tuesday, October 25, at a press conference on the balance sheet of the 1st year of the last term of the municipal executive headed by Vítor Aleixo.

The fact that Calcinha has been closed for a few months has been the subject of much criticism.

After a first tender has not had any concession proposals, a new contest ended up getting two interested parties.

To this end, considered David Pimentel, councilor responsible for Economic Activities, contributed to presentation and clarification session, held on 21 September, about the public tender for the concession.

«We believed that there were interested parties who, probably, had not submitted proposals because they did not know and we decided to open the doors of Calcinha», he said.

In the opinion of this official, the session “cleared many doubts” because people could see “the state of the Calcinha: fully equipped, furnished, with crockery”.

The café was, moreover, the subject of structural works to prevent infiltrations and the degradation of the building.

Those who stay to explore Calcinha must also present a cultural program, because the objective of the municipality is for this to be a different café, in line with the values of the gathering that have always characterized it.

Calcinha is part of the Route of Cafés with History of Portugal. The space was frequented by the poet António Aleixo and his figure is perpetuated at the door of Calcinha, in a statue in his memory.

That space was classified as a Property of Municipal Interest in 2012 and, in 2014, acquired by the municipality. After requalification works, it reopened in 2017.
