Navy Day celebrations end this Sunday, May 22

On the morning of this Sunday, 22 May, hundreds of people attended the Military Ceremony of the Navy's Day, which took place in downtown Faro. 

Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo, Chief of Staff of the Navy and National Maritime Authority, as well as Defense Minister Helena Carreiras, presided over the parade and other ceremonies.

"We are here, in Faro, with the aim of making known who we are and what we do, offering the inhabitants the opportunity to get to know the values ​​that characterize the Navy and with which, I am sure, they identify. The celebration of this year's Navy Day is also an opportunity to test and evaluate the logistical capacity of the Navy, projecting about 1200 military personnel to a distant scenario from the Naval Base, and to exercise the operation and projection of our forces», he began by referring Admiral Gouveia e Melo.

On behalf of the Navy, the Armada Chief of Staff also thanked the Mayor of Faro «the warm way in which the municipality welcomed the proposal» to celebrate the Day in the Navy in this city. Admiral Gouveia e Melo also expressed “deep recognition for the friendly way in which the people of Faro” welcomed the Navy.

In her speech, Minister Helena Carreiras said that "in such a globalized and dynamic world, where maritime trade has so much weight in the global economy, it is essential to guarantee the free and safe use of the sea".

“We are aware that the international situation itself has generated a significant increase in requests for the use of the Armed Forces in new and different scenarios, with an impact on the level of capabilities, flexibility of their use, interoperability and operational readiness”, he added. .

The official also considered that the project of a Multifunctional Naval Platform, whose funding was approved by the Council of Ministers on 12 May, under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), «is fundamental to support the Navy to strengthen its capacity operational'.

For the Defense Minister, it is necessary to “continue to value the military condition and dignify the Armed Forces”.

After the military ceremony, which took place next to the Manuel Bivar Garden, there was also a demonstration of skills at Cais das Portas do Mar.

This was the end of the Navy Day celebrations, which this year was celebrated in Faro.
