Bioconstruction techniques with sugarcane are the subject of a practical course in Alcantarilha

in March and April

A practical course on bioconstruction, during which a multifunctional space will be created, designed to host yoga, meditation, dance and workshops, using materials such as Mediterranean cane, bamboo and reed, will take place between the 21st March and April 30 at the Animame space, at Quinta do Rogel, in Alcantarilha.

The training will be given by the English bio-architect Jonathan Cory-Wright and the Spanish master craftsman Antonio Gandano, specialists in construction with natural materials.

«Called CanyaViva, the architectural technique with canes and bamboos was created and developed by Jonathan himself 20 years ago, who carried out the construction of more than 80 multipurpose spaces in countries such as Portugal, Spain, Italy, India and Chile», according to the QRER cooperative. , which supports this initiative.

“We build with natural, local and abundant materials. This is our working philosophy. Cane and bamboo are a great alternative to the materials used in modern architecture, and allow the construction of both ephemeral and permanent spaces», says the English bio-architect.

The complete course lasts 2 months – 290 hours of practice and 30 hours of theory – and is organized into three parts: harvesting, design and construction of the structure and roof covering.

The harvest will be carried out in the Alcantarilha stream, over two weeks. Then, for 4 weeks, «the reeds will be cleaned, sorted and grouped in highly resistant flexible arches to build a permanent structure on a hexagonal wooden platform».

The last two weeks will be dedicated to the construction of the thatched roof with reeds from the river.

“It is not necessary to set aside two months to participate in the course. For those who don't have the time, there are smaller packages, lasting one or two weeks», they describe.

The course costs between 200 and 800 euros, price that includes food and accommodation.
