Faro and Silves are the finalists in the Algarve for the Municipality of the Year Award

27 municipalities across the country are nominated in various categories

Faro, with the project «Faro Active», and Silves, with «Silves Composting from Serra ao Mar», are the two Algarve municipalities finalists in the Municipality of the Year Award, whose winners will be announced tomorrow, December 2, in a ceremony to take place in Funchal.

The competition promoted by the University of Minho, that already had Vila do Bispo as the winner, intends to «recognise and reward good practices in projects implemented by municipalities with remarkable impacts on towns, cities and territory, on the economy and society, which promote growth, inclusion and/or sustainability».

The seventh edition of this initiative, promoted by the University of Minho, through the UM-Cities platform, has 27 municipalities nominated in various categories and also for the most important award, that of Municipality of the Year.

The seventh edition had 44 applications from all over the country, including the autonomous regions, and projects from 27 municipalities were nominated for nine regional categories, for the inter-municipal category and, also, for the grand prize.

For this edition, the nominated finalists are: Amares, Cabeceiras de Basto and Monção (North with less than 20 thousand inhabitants); Amarante and Guimarães (North with more than 20 thousand inhabitants); Maia, Porto, Santa Maria da Feira and Valongo (Metropolitan Area of ​​Porto); Arganil, Pampilhosa da Serra and Vouzela (Center with less than 20 thousand inhabitants); Águeda, Figueira da Foz, Mealhada and Vagos (Centre with more than 20 thousand inhabitants); Arruda dos Vinhos, Palmela and Vila Franca de Xira (Lisbon Metropolitan Area); Aljustrel, Portel and Viana do Alentejo (Alentejo); Faro and Silves (Algarve); Santa Cruz (Autonomous Regions); Espinho, Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Oliveira de Azeméis, Porto, Póvoa Varzim, São João da Madeira, Santa Maria da Feira, Santo Tirso, Trofa, Valongo, Vila do Conde and Vila Nova de Gaia; Barcelos, Braga, Famalicão, Guimarães (Intermunicipal).

This initiative by the University of Minho started in 2014, and that year the award was won by Lisbon, with the project “Há vida na Mouraria”, followed, in 2015, by Vila do Bispo, with the “Bird Observation Festival & Activities of Nature", in 2016, Fundão, with the "Academias de Code", in 2017, Guimarães, with the project "Pay-as-You-Throw" in the Historic Center, in 2018, Arouca, with the "Arouca - UNESCO World Geopark” and, in 2019, Funchal, with the “Funchal, Accessible Destination”.
