Secondary School of Portimão invited Porfírio Silva to the session of the “Youth Parliament”

Session took place this Monday, December 6th, and was attended by about 50 students

The Manuel Teixeira Gomes Secondary School, in Portimão, joined the “Youth Parliament” program, having had, this Monday, December 6th, a session with deputy Porfírio Silva as a guest.

The session was attended by around 50 students, having addressed Edmund Burke's “Fake news: the impact of disinformation on democracy”, deliberative democracy and, also, the particularities of life and parliamentary debates.

The “Youth Parliament” program aims to “stimulate the presentation of lists of students who compare arguments and propose policy measures, in debates that take place in each school, in the region and, for the winning schools, in the national session of the Assembly of Republic», says the group of young members of this initiative.

Socialist deputy Porfírio Silva is a PhD and researcher in Philosophy of Science, collaborator at the Institute of Systems and Robotics and at the Center for Philosophy of Science at the University of Lisbon, «where he focused his most recent research on the theme of artificial societies and the social role of artificial intelligence and robots». He also published several books on philosophy, politics and poetry.

In the field of politics, he is a member of the National Council of Education, National Secretary of the Socialist Party and deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, where he is coordinator of Socialist parliamentarians in the Committee on Education and Science.

Responding to a challenge from the school's students, Porfírio Silva agreed “to make an encouraging political statement for the youth, thus becoming the first guest to do so at “Our Speakers' Corner”, recently opened at Manuel Secondary School Teixeira Gomes.

It is the intention of the students that «this “tradition” is continued, whether the guests are scientists, writers, musicians, artists, priests, poets or any other area», concludes the group of young people.
