The GNR's SEPNA raised two administrative offenses against the company that is intervening in the former Cofaco factory, in Vila Real de Santo António, for alleged irregularities related to the removal of materials with asbestos, following a complaint by the PAN - People - Animals - Nature.

The VRSA council of this party went public revealing that it "has alerted the competent authorities to the activities of asbestos removal in the former Cofaco area, removal requested at the request of Nautiber – Estaleiros Navais do Guadiana, the company that owns the space."

"The removal activities took place without the ACT – Authority for Working Conditions having been notified of such procedures, in the sense that the works were inspected to ensure the health of workers and the surrounding environment," accused the PAN.

Following the complaint, the SEPNA went to the scene and «looked two notices of infraction relating to the lack of mandatory notification to the Authority for Working Conditions: one for having carried out activities in which the workers were or could have been exposed to dust or materials that contain asbestos, and another for failure to draw up the work plan for demolition or removal of materials that may contain asbestos».

"Asbestos is a carcinogen that puts people who deal with this type of asbestos at risk, which must entail greater responsibility for companies in these interventions, since it endangers people's health, which is why it is unacceptable to lack of assurance of inspection in this case. The purpose of this alert is for this type of situation not to be repeated and for all companies to comply with the regulations regarding hazardous materials», says Saúl Rosa, spokesman for the Vila Real de Santo António council and district commissioner for Faro of People-Animals-Nature.

Contacted by Sul Informação, Nauiber declined to comment on what happened.
