Portimão once again raises awareness of breast cancer prevention in yet another "Pink October"

Initiatives will take place this Saturday, October 9th

The municipality of Portimão will once again join the international campaign “Outubro Rosa” on 9 October, with a view to «raising the population's awareness of the prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer», in partnership with the Portuguese League Against Cancer (LPCC) and the Oncology Association of the Algarve (AOA).

In partnership with the LPCC – Southern Regional Nucleus, Portimão will develop several solidarity walks and a meeting with a view to raising awareness on the issue of prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer.

The walks will take place from 10:00 am in the three parishes of the county: in Portimão – departure from the riverside area, next to Clube Naval (registration: 282 470 813 | [email protected]), in Alvor – departure next to the Sports Complex (registration: 282 248 570 | [email protected]) and in Mexilhoeira Grande – departure from the Sports Complex (registration: 282 248 571 | [email protected]).

Participants can purchase the solidarity t-shirt in advance, which has a cost of 5 euros, at the different registration points or on the same day at the starting points of the hikes.

As for the “Outubro Rosa” get-together, it will take place at 11:00 am in the Nuno Mergulhão room of the Clube Naval de Portimão. It will count with the participation of Dr. Joana Xavier, assistant researcher at CINTESIS – Center for Research in Health Technologies and Services of the University of Algarve. who will be talking to those interested about breast cancer.

With a female population of five million people, currently more than 6 thousand new cases of breast cancer appear in Portugal per year, that is, 11 new occurrences per day, with four women dying every day with the disease.

They are fundamental rules for women to know their body to look in the mirror regularly and know how to recognize the changes that may occur, in order to detect any changes as prematurely as possible.

Also to mark this month dedicated to the prevention of breast cancer, the Paços do Concelho building, TEMPO – Portimão Municipal Theater and the Portimão Museum display pink lighting every October.

 

 

In parallel, the Southern Regional Nucleus of the LPCC is carrying out a screening campaign for the early diagnosis of skin cancer, with the aim of detecting lesions, as well as ensuring, in due time, the respective follow-up in the National Health Service .

With city council support, the campaign will pass through the Portimão Museum on 9th October, in an action under the responsibility of the dermatologist Rita Pimenta, from 9:00 am to 13:00 pm and from 14:00 pm to 18:00 pm. The screening is free and open to the entire community, with special attention to people with at least one of these characteristics: being over 50 years old, having a family history of skin cancer, having more than 50 nevi (signs) and low phototypes (skin and clear eyes) or work in a profession that involves exposure to the sun.

The Algarve Oncological Association (AOA) has also developed various activities in the municipality of Portimão for the benefit of cancer patients, their families and the population in general.

These activities are aimed at "education for health, promoting a better lifestyle through good eating, behavioral and social habits, with regular screenings for breast cancer, essential for the early diagnosis of this pathology, being one of the greatest positive impacts of this work". , explains the municipality.

Even in times of pandemic, the AOA continued its activity, having tracked 3334 women in Portimão last year, respecting all the sanitary norms of the General Directorate of Health.

Also in this area of ​​health, the HOPE project of the Teia D'Impulsos association deserves to be highlighted in the municipality of Portimão, which, despite having only been launched in March 2019, last year supported 15 cancer patients at various stages of the disease process.

HOPE emerged «to facilitate access to a model of integrated care, from a perspective of social responsibility, based on processes of humanization and centralization of services», stresses the municipality of Portimo.

The main areas of activity of the project include social service, nutrition, legal support and complementary and alternative medicines, as well as activities to promote well-being, from clinical practice to massage, including courses in mindfulness, reiki and yoga.
