Seven municipalities in the Algarve celebrate European Mobility Week

This year's European Mobility Week has the theme “Move sustainably. Be healthy"

Faro, Lagos, Loulé, Portimão, Silves, São Brás de Alportel and Tavira are the Algarve municipalities that will participate, from tomorrow, the 16th and until the 22nd of September, in the European Mobility Week, which this year has the theme “Move- if sustainably. Be healthy".

Scheduled every year, the European Mobility Week offers citizens the opportunity to experience activities dedicated to sustainable mobility, to sensitize communities about the need for behavior change.

Family bike rides, hikes to observe the region's flora and fauna, workshops, gatherings of skateboarders, exhibitions or awareness actions are some of the proposals in the seven participating Algarve municipalities.

 

 

During European Mobility Week, FARO there will be a street exhibition “Move sustainably, be healthy” which will have a set of pieces on sustainable mobility prepared by professors and graduate students in Sustainable Cities, which will be on display at Largo Pé da Cruz until the September 30th.

Also from the 16th, the maps “Faro, 15-minute city" which will be presented in digital format and, later, in billboards distributed throughout the city, several routes that can be done on foot in 10 or 15 minutes.

From the 18th to the 22nd, the Manuel Bivar garden will host, between 10:00 and 19:00,workshops, exhibitions, get-togethers, cycle tours, walks and races, skating, competitions, road safety circuits, among other initiatives.

The program will also include the action “Let's learn to ride a bicycle with AEProsa [Pinheiro e Rosa School Group]”, aimed at children, young people and adults in the municipality.

The Algarve capital will also have family bike rides, beginners' cycling courses, a campaign to collect these vehicles and accessories and a BIKEME stand to promote and experiment with these sustainable means of travel.

The event will also feature gatherings, on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of September, at 17 pm, under the themes of mobility and sustainability, with the participation of various entities and partners involved in this project.

The closing of the event is scheduled for September 22, at 17:30 pm, at Parque Ribeirinho, with concerts by “Funkarmonica” and Helena Madeira (“Concerts on the Bike & All”), which can be seen by bicycle, scooter, skateboard or on foot.

All week, from 16th to 22nd of September, LAGOS it will have the urban transport “A Onda” free for everyone, as well as it will present the “Pé no Pedal” project to all the 1st cycle classes of the municipality's schools. At “Lagos em Forma”, those who want to try the swimming pool, gym and group classes for free can do so during these days.

Residents of the municipality can enjoy a 30% discount when renting bicycles at Daily Rent, or even ride for free in Lagos Bike Tours vehicles (subject to bicycle availability).

On the 17th of September, the Science Garden will host the activity “Move sustainably”, an initiative to take place between 10:00 and 17:00, promoted by the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos.

On the 18th, there will be a workshop, by Bike Sul, about bicycle mechanics for families and an exhibition of vehicles on wheels, at 16 pm, at the Cultural Center of Barão de São João.

At 17 pm, a family free tour will take place, departing from the Lagos Mountain Bike Center (in Mata de Barão), with the route “Rota da Mata Nacional”.

“Rediscover our Earth” will present, on the 18th and 19th, the existing pedestrian routes in the municipality, as part of the “Saúde em Movimento 2020/2021” project.

On the 20th, the “Biodiversity Walk” will observe the fauna and flora of Ponta da Piedade, with the users of the homes of Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Lagos, in partnership with the association A Rocha. The tours are scheduled for 10:00 am and 16:00 pm and will last 45 minutes.

Roller Lagos Clube de Patinagem will also organize a demonstration and get-together of skateboarders, to take place on the 17th of September, at 17:00 pm, at the Skate Parque de Bensafrim, on the 18th, at 10:00 am, at the Skate Parque de Lagos, and on the 20th, at 17:00 pm, at the Skate Parque in Barão de São João.

On the 22nd of September, European Car Free Day, Lagos will have a bicycle competition at schools in the municipality, by Bike Sul, and a “Cãominhada” by the Municipal Kennel, starting at 9:30 am in the National Forest of Barão de São João, where you can take your pet or walk the dogs available for adoption.

LOULE will also join the European Mobility Week with the dissemination of the promotional video “SEM 21” in social networks e municipality website, in order to sensitize the citizens to the smooth mobility.

also PORTIMÃO will not be left out, having planned an intense week of activities, from 17 to 22 September, between the city and Alvor.

The planned activities start on Friday, September 17th, with a walking tour through a nocturnal historical and cultural route, guided by the techniques of Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes and departing from the bandstand in Portimão. The route is subject to limited prior registration, by calling 282 480 492.

For the 18th, at 17:00 pm, with a meeting point at the old auction in Alvor, a visit to Estação Salva-vidas is planned, a project that, according to the Portimão municipality, «aimed at giving a voice to the community and bringing visitors to know each other. the intervention process of the museum center dedicated to the history of this facility and the fishing tradition of the local community».

On the 18th and 19th, there will be trips on a solar boat, with the ticket costing 7,5 euros per adult and children up to 10 years old will pay half of this amount, in an action entitled “By the margins of the History of Arade”, which will be guided by the Algarve Sun Boat team.

The embarkation point will be at the Clube Naval de Portimão pier and the tours start at 10:00 am, 11:30 am, 15:00 pm and 16:30 pm, with the vessel having a capacity for eight people. Also on the 19th, the proposal is for a new visit to the “Urban Landscapes”, this time during the day, through a historical and cultural journey to discover the heritage. The meeting point will be at 15:30 pm at Largo da Câmara (Palácio Bivar), and registration is mandatory by calling 282 480 492.

The municipality will also join the activities of the Bike Week, organized by the Trail Runners Association and, on the 18th and 19th, will join the Prologues and Trials Marathon and Half Marathon Mountain Bike “Portimão Bike Challenge” and the equipment exhibition and bicycle accessories.

On the 21st and 22nd of September, at 15 pm, in the auditorium of Portimão Arena, workshops will begin on Sustainable and Healthy Mobility with the presentation of ideas and proposals for better and healthier mobility, with well-known speakers such as Pedro Ribeiro da Silva (urban planner and land planner), Paula Teles (director of MPT – Mobility and Land Planning) and Joana Cruz (nutritionist). The workshop will be broadcast online on Facebook.

On the 21st, there will be a tour “Ao taste the tide”, on a route at dusk through the parish of Alvor. The meeting point will be at the Alvor Sports Complex, at 18:30 pm, with mandatory registration through the e-mail. The next day, the proposal is “Walking by the sea”, starting at 18:30 pm, next to the Clube Naval, and mandatory prior registration for the e-mail.

The Vai e Vem – Urban Circuit of Portimão will be free on the 18th and 19th of September.

In partnership with the Parish Council of Alvor, the municipality of Portimão will mark the European Car Free Day in Alvor, in order to lead the population and tourists to (re)discover the center of the village, but free of car circulation.

Car traffic will be closed on September 19, between 11:00 and 19:00, at Vasco da Gama street, Pedro Alvares Cabral, Dr. Frederico Ramos Mendes street, D. João II street, Castelo street, Padre Mendes street, Dr. Afonso Costa, Rua 1º de Dezembro, Rua dos Pescadores, Rua de São João and Rua Maria Teresa J. Duarte Dionísio.

On that day, the cars will give way to the movement of people through the streets of the center of Alvor, thus providing a «space for music, sports entertainment and the experiences of the past, with the people of the village showing their arts and crafts and the children playing the traditional games», stresses the municipality of Portimão.

The water carrier will be back in the typical streets of Alvor, in the company of his donkey, distributing fresh water, crossing with the tourist train, which on this date has special tickets for one euro.

In addition to the traditional Mercadinho da Ria, free bicycles will be made available to circulate the streets of Alvor, as well as scooters. There will also be the company “Tula Labs”, a startup from Portimão, which offers several electric vehicles.

To explore the Ria de Alvor, paddle boards, canoes and pedal boats are available free of charge in the morning at Clube Naval D. João II.

TAVIRA will close some of the streets in the historic centre, as part of the European Car Free Day 22nd of September), opening them only to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. They are: Rua da Liberdade, Rua José Pires Padinha, Rua Corte Real, Rua Jaques Pessoa, as well as the Ponte do Gilão.

Em SÃO BRÁS DE ALPORTEL only the European Car Free Day will be celebrated, on September 22, at 17:30 pm, next to Skate Park, with sports entertainment and various activities.

The initiative will also have a traffic-free route on Dr. Alberto Sousa street, between the roundabout of knowledge (skateboard park) and the empreita roundabout (covered swimming pools).

Em SILVES, the European Mobility Week will start on September 16th, at 17:00, with a march and, at 18:30, with a race, both in Silves City Park, hosted by the Municipal Center for March and Race.

The following day, the 22 kilometers of sector 10 of the Via Algarviana, which also includes the territory of the Aspiring Geopark Algarvensis, will be covered by bicycle.

On the 18th and 19th, Saturday and Sunday, the “Manhãs a Rolar” initiative will encourage the population to use bicycles and other means of sustainable mobility, taking place between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm, at Skate Parque and the Bike Path of Parque da Cidade of Silves.

Also on the 19th, there will be a bike ride at 10:00 am, promoted by Grupo Aventura and Sport of Alcantarilha Gare, taking place between the headquarters of the group and the primary school of Malhão. The next day, there will be another tour, promoted by the Associação BTT Algarve Maniacs, starting at 18:00, in Armação de Pêra.

For the 21st, a march (starting at 17:00 pm) and a race (starting at 18:30 pm) are scheduled to take place in São Bartolomeu de Messines.

To end the European Mobility Week, in Silves, a “Bicycle Train” will be organized with the collaboration of the Associação Extrememosul, in order to integrate 2nd and 3rd cycle students in the activities.

The initiative will be divided into two parts, with the first departure at 8:00 am, from Aldeia Ruiva, and scheduled arrival at 8:25 am at EB 2,3 João de Deus, and the second, departure from the same educational institution at 16:00 pm and 18:00 pm and return to the village at 16:30 pm and 18:30 pm.

Silves will also celebrate the European Car Free Day on September 22, with an incentive for the population to walk or use bicycles to travel to school or work.
