From Triana to Tavira: Sevillian ceramics from the XNUMXth to XNUMXth centuries are displayed at the Islamic Center

Ceramics of Sevillian origin found during archaeological excavations in Tavira

The exhibition “From Triana to Tavira. Sevillian ceramics from the 9th to XNUMXth centuries”, which aims to make known the commercial relations between these two cities, opens on the XNUMXth of July, at the Islamic Center of the Municipal Museum of Tavira.

«Since its foundational moments, Tavira attracted the interest of the most varied peoples. This was partly due to the strategic location of its port, as it enabled the arrival, over the centuries, of traders, capital, techniques and traditions from different parts of Europe and the Mediterranean», stresses the Chamber of Tavira.

«The recognition of its economic, political and social importance occurred in 1520, when it was elevated to a city, by the hands of King Manuel I», he adds.

The close commercial relationship between Tavira and Seville enabled the arrival in the Portuguese port "of a significant number of ceramics, which allowed us to discover the tastes and economic capacity of the holders of the pieces".

In recent years, many are the Sevillian ceramics, removed from the Tavirense subsoil, as a result of various archaeological interventions.

The present exhibition is open until the 30th of March, from Tuesday to Saturday, between 09:30 am and 16:30 pm.

Note: The opening and duration of the exhibition may change due to the application of any restrictive measures in the scope of combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
