Portimão receives the exhibition “De Polo a Polo”, a trip to the great natural paradises that brings together around 30 prestigious nature photographers, from the 30th of July to the 8th of September, in the riverside area of the city.

The exhibition presents 52 images «of great beauty on various natural areas of the Earth, from the Arctic to Antarctica, with a common denominator: to raise awareness of the importance of conserving these unique areas of the Planet», says the “la Caixa” Foundation in a note sent to essays.

On display for the first time in Portugal, this exhibition invites visitors to take a journey through “some of the most spectacular natural spaces on Earth, many of them known as hotspots, terrestrial ecoregions recognized for their high biodiversity and which are seriously threatened by human activity».

The photographs come from the archive of the National Geographic Society and are the work of prestigious and recognized nature photographers such as Frans Lanting, Steve Winter, Paul Nicklen and Tim Laman, among others, some of them award winners such as the Wildlife Photographer of the Year and the W.

The exhibition opened on the morning of Thursday, 29 July, and was attended by Isilda Gomes, president of the Portimão City Council, José Pena Amaral, consultant to the Executive Committee and member of the Social Responsibility Committee of BPI, and Javier Gómez Vargas , commissioner of the exhibition.

It is part of the “Arte na Rua” programme, launched in 2006, through which the “la Caixa” Foundation aims to “bring science, nature and culture to people outside the usual context of museums and exhibition halls”.

The dissemination of culture is a fundamental instrument for promoting people's growth and, for this reason, the “la Caixa” Foundation and BPI work to bring knowledge to audiences of all ages and educational contexts.

This program has brought creations by artists such as Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore and photographers Cristina Garcia Rodero and Sebastião Salgado, among others, closer to the general public.

Now, in collaboration with National Geographic Society, the program integrates a new line centered on science and nature.

«The images allow us to travel through these special areas that play a vital role in preserving the planet's health», concludes the “la Caixa” Foundation.

The exhibition can be visited on Avenida Capitão Fernandes Leão Pacheco, in the riverside area of Portimão, in the Largo do Dique area, with free entry.

Guided tours are also scheduled for the public, on Saturdays and Sundays, from 18:00 pm, and no prior appointment is required.

The exhibition by the ”la Caixa” Foundation counts on the collaboration of BPI (Portuguese Investment Bank) and the Portimão Municipal Council.
