Project to create Marine Park in the Algarve is handed over to the Government today

The final proposal for the creation of a Marine Park in the bay of Armação de Pêra, between the Farol of Alfanzina and Marina de Albufeira, will be handed over this Friday, the 7th, to the ministers of the Environment and the Sea, at the University of Algarve, by the Oceano Azul Foundation and by the Sea Science Center (CCMAR), who are promoting This project.

The proposal was developed over the last three years, in an unprecedented public consultation process that it also involved local authorities and fishermen associations., and will be delivered in a closed meeting that will take place at the University of Algarve.

The area in question is comprised between the farol of Alfanzina (western limit), in the municipality of Lagoa, and Albufeira marina (eastern limit), and extends to a depth of 30 meters.

The area also encompasses the largest natural reef in Portugal.

According to habitat and marine biodiversity mapping studies carried out between 2003 and 2017, 889 species were identified in this area, 19 of them with conservation status, such as groupers and seahorses.
