Operation that detained Conceição Cabrita was also searched in Lisbon, Leiria and Ourém

At issue, "these facts are likely to be part of the practice of crimes of corruption, undue receipt of advantage and abuse of power"

"Operation Triangle" under which Conceição Cabrita, mayor of Vila Real de Santo António was arrested this Tuesday, April 13, involved around 20 searches, not only in the Algarve, but also in Lisbon, Leiria and Ourém. 

In a joint statement, the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) and the Judiciary Police (PJ) explain that there were "home searches, but also in establishments, lawyers' offices" and in the VRSA Chamber itself.

These entities say that four people were detained, "one of them holding a political office". This is Conceição Cabrita, like the Sul Informação had already advanced.

Among the detainees, all aged between 50 and 70, are a public administration worker, an employee of the VRSA Chamber, and two businessmen.

Under investigation, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office and the PJ, "there are suspicions of illicit action" on the part of Conceição Cabrita, "who benefited from the collaboration of employees, as well as other stakeholders, in the intermediation of a business, the purchase of property, owned by the municipality, on the beach of Monte Gordo».

At stake, "are facts likely to integrate the practice of crimes of corruption, undue receipt of advantage and abuse of power".

«The operation had the collaboration of the National Unit for Combating Corruption, the Directorate of the Criminal Investigation Center and Department of Leiria of the Judiciary Police, namely in carrying out searches of the suspects’ residences, lawyers’ offices and banking institution, where they were seized several documents, objects, and evidence that will be analyzed», reads in the same statement.

The detainees will be present at the Court of Criminal Instruction of Évora for the first judicial interrogation and application of coercive measures.
