The Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI) defended today a reinforcement of the inspection of the terraces by the security forces, admitting that these spaces can be closed and offenders held liable in case of non-compliance with the rules in force.

The reinforcement of inspection on the terraces, which reopened on Monday as part of the second phase of the decontamination, was one of the subjects of the meeting of the Monitoring Structure of the State of Emergency, which took place on Wednesday, under the coordination of the Minister of Administration Internal, Eduardo Cabrita,

Among the various topics addressed at the meeting, which served to take stock of the implementation of the measures in force in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, the MAI highlights the attention given to “strengthening inspection of esplanades by forces and services of security".

The entities that are part of the Monitoring Structure of the State of Emergency admit that “non-compliance with the measures to contain the pandemic justifies the early closure of these spaces and the corresponding accountability of offenders”.

Entrepreneurs of catering establishments have already expressed their concern about the non-compliance by many customers with the use of masks on the terraces.

Another of the rules imposed for the functioning of these spaces has to do with the capacity.

This structure monitors and produces regular information on the measures in force in mainland Portugal and within the scope of the pandemic, having met on Wednesday for the 24th time since March 2020.

This meeting was attended by videoconference by the secretaries of State from the various areas of government and regional coordination, as well as those responsible for the GNR, PSP, SEF, Food Safety and Economy Authority (ASAE), National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority and the Forces Armed.

"The need for greater inspection in sectors of activity where outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 have arisen was also addressed, both by the delay in controlling the pandemic and by the negative effect on the risks of incidence in municipalities with a small population", says the MAI , in a statement.

The Ministry headed by Eduardo Cabrita also indicates that “the positive impact on the economy, resulting from the first phase of de-confinement, was also highlighted” at the meeting.
