The Council of Lagoa went public to denounce the undue felling of trees along the coast, in various parts of the county's coast, and «to express its indignation to the competent authorities».

The Lagoon local authority has already denounced "some of the cases identified to the Nature and Environment Protection Service (SEPNA / GNR), the competent authority to monitor and ensure compliance with forestry legislation" and is already preparing "new formalizations of complaints about these environmental offenses'.

Undue felling of trees has been recorded in several places along the coast of Lagoa, «with particular incidence in Paraíso-Vale Currais, Algar Seco, Alfanzina-Vale Figueira and near Leixão do Ladrão-Carvalho», all in the area of Praia do Carvoeiro , according to the Chamber of Lagoa.

The destruction of medium and large trees along the coast of the municipality of Lagoa is a phenomenon that has become «increasingly frequent in recent years. The motivation for these acts seems to be related to the search for direct views over the sea from dwellings located in those areas».

«These actions to destroy the municipality's landscape heritage are of concern to the municipality, either because of their frequency or because they mainly affect vegetation that grows above 1 meter or 1,5 m in height. Pines are apparently the species most targeted by these fellings, but the services of the municipality have observed that no species are exempt from this deplorable attitude», described the municipality.

The Câmara de Lagoa «reinforces the appeal to the defense of the environmental heritage of the municipality» and invites the community to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the UN.

"The 15th of these 17 goals foresees the need to protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, fight desertification, halt and reverse land degradation and halt the loss of biodiversity," he said.
