Postigo, collapse, prophylactic and demagoguery were the most researched words in early 2021

5 million consulters who performed more than 23 million searches in Priberam Dictionary in January

What most interested the Portuguese at the beginning of the year? Priberam released the most searched words in January on Priberam Dictionary of the Portuguese Language and the results provide some interesting clues, with the cold and the pandemic continuing to dominate today.

Depending on the origin (many of the users are in the southern hemisphere), staying warm by the fireplace, as the Portuguese adage suggests, seems to have been exactly what some of the more than 5 million users who performed more than 23 million searches did on the Priberam Dictionary in January. After all, the cold and the covid-19 pandemic did not let up, at least in Portugal.

And what were Priberam users looking for in January? The new confinement triggered the search for wicket, collapse ou prophylactic and the presidential election campaign was at the origin of searches for demagogy ou misogynistic.

No top 10 of the most searched words last month we still found sorority, Access, to procrastinate, debauchery e fruitful.

In the remaining Portuguese-speaking countries, the list of the most searched words in January in Priberam is headed by tease (Angola), sadomasochism (Brazil), driver (Cape Green), brow (Guinea Bissau), embark (Mozambique), scavengers (São Tomé and Príncipe) and serology (East Timor).

These were the most searched words in the first month of 2021, but the 31 words that defined the year 2020 available here or in https://oanoempalavras.ptWhere it presents a total of 31 words chosen from the 250 that were most searched throughout 2020 by users of the Priberam Dictionary.

O website which, for the fourth consecutive year, is the result of an initiative by Priberam and Agência Lusa, integrates content from photo reporters and journalists from the news agency, who give context to each of the words, and is structured in chronological order.

The year 2020 saw a very significant increase in the number of searches in the Priberam Dictionary, rising to 45 million users (7 million more than the previous year), which generated a number of searches that is almost double the number registered in 2019 : from about 133 million this went to 261 million.
