Two birds targeted for attempted shooting joined the RIAS in a single week

Of the two birds, only one was saved, continuing to recover

Two birds of prey, which were targeted for attempted shooting, entered the RIAS – Wildlife Recovery and Research Center in just one week. It was a black kite (milvus migrans) and a goshawk (accipiter gentilis). Only the kite was saved.

According to the Wildlife Research and Recovery Center that operates at Quinta de Marim (Olhão), the black kite (milvus migrans) was found in Salir and transported to the RIAS by the SEPNA/GNR team from Loulé.

In addition to two old fractures, the veterinary team found three shotgun bullets (two in the left ulna and one in the right side) lodged in the bird's body.

The kite is already in the tunnel (outdoor installation with about 50 meters), where it will recover its physical condition, performing daily physiotherapy, and where it will be provided with adequate food.

That same week, found by Sapadores Florestais, a goshawk joined the RIAS (accipiter gentilis) from the parish of Vaqueiros, municipality of Alcoutim. During physical examination, it was possible to observe an open fracture in the right metacarpal.

Suspecting a gunshot, the veterinary team carried out a radiological examination, where three bullets were actually observed in the bird's body.

Due to the wound, it was estimated that he had been hit about five days before his entry, which caused the extreme weakness he was in and, unfortunately, led to his death.

RIAS recalls that shooting is a crime against nature and that these species are protected by Decree Law 49/2005.
