Sophia de Mello Breyner Literary Contest has started

The awards ceremony for this edition will take place in Lagos, on April 10, 2021

The 15th edition of the Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen literary competition, aimed at students from across the region who attend the 2nd, 3rd and secondary cycles, has already started.

The Municipalities of Loulé and Lagos, through their Municipal Libraries, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen and Júlio Dantas, are once again partners in an initiative aimed at promoting the work of this writer among students in the Algarve.

Participants may submit works in the categories of Writing (poetry, prose or essay, in Portuguese) or Illustration, original and unpublished until the date of the final decision, which focus on a work by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, whose title should be indicated when submitting the work.

Literary productions or illustrations can be delivered in one of the two municipal libraries – Loulé or Lagos – until February 19, 2021.

The jury that will evaluate the works in the competition is made up of a representative of the Municipality of Lagos, a representative of the Municipality of Loulé, a representative of the General Directorate of Books, Archives and Libraries, a representative of the DGESTE - Directorate- General of School Establishments (DSR-Algarve) and a guest author.

This year the president of the jury will be the Municipality of Lagos.

Two works will be distinguished by level of education and by modality. The prize to be awarded will be a gift card of €400 or €200, for the 1st or 2nd place, respectively, and educational establishments will receive a distinction.

The awards ceremony for this edition will take place in Lagos, on April 10, 2021.

The Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen competition has had, over the years, a very important role in the school context due to the significant number of students who have participated in this initiative, being, in that sense, a relevant vehicle in promoting the legacy of one of the biggest names in Portuguese Literature, as well as promoting reading among young people.
