The increase in Covid-19 cases, that has been registered in the last days in the Algarve, is "following the trend" of the rest of the country, said this Thursday, October 1, the regional health delegate, at a press conference. The region now has 26 new infected people.
According to data revealed today by the Regional Health Authority, the Algarve now has a cumulative total of 1697 people who have contracted the new coronavirus.
There are 610 active cases. As for the recovered ones, there were no changes compared to yesterday, remaining the same 1066.
According to the regional health delegate, the number of contacts in active surveillance is currently “the highest ever”: 1508.
"These are the people who have to stay in their homes on the advice of the health authorities or because they are sick or because, in some way, they have had a high-risk contact," explained Ana Cristina Guerreiro.
The number of hospitalized is 16, and four people are in intensive care. This last week, there was also no new death in the Algarve, keeping the 21 deaths previously counted.
António Pina, president of AMAL – Algarve Intermunicipal Community and of the District Civil Protection Commission, considered that the increase in cases in recent days was already “expected”. "This growth was registered and perhaps, until now, a little below the expected increase", he said.
For her part, Ana Cristina Guerreiro explained that “intervention is still aimed at containing the breaking of chains” of contagion. “We didn't change strategy, which means that the analysis remains, aware that the number of cases is higher. We continue to isolate contacts – that's our biggest strategy,” he added.
"We are confident that we are doing everything possible to break the transmission chains," he concluded.
