Olhão lifeguard rescues five people at Armona-Culatra bar

National Maritime Authority reinforces "the importance of taking special care with the activities that take place near the bars of ports"

At the end of yesterday afternoon, the Olhão Life-Saving Station rescued an adult and four children who had been dragged by the current aboard a kayak and were reported missing, near the bar of Armona-Culatra.

The local command of the Maritime Police of Olhão received, at 16:50 pm yesterday, an alert from the military of the foot surveillance of the “Praia Segura” project, reporting the existence of two people who would be in difficulties at the Armona-Culatra bar, due to the strong current that was felt.

The Captain of the Port of Olhão immediately activated the Olhão Lifeguard Station, which went to the site with a semi-rigid vessel.

Upon arrival at the site, the two people had already been rescued by personal watercraft that were sailing in the area, and information was received that a missing kayak was also present, with an adult and four children on board, which disappeared while trying to cross the bar to the island of Culatra.

After some searches in the area, with the support of a lifeguard from Armona-Mar, the kayak and the crew were found, having been rescued to the vessel of the Lifesaving Station of Olhão.

According to the Maritime Authority, "the crew were all in good health, so they were transported to Armona-Mar beach."

The National Maritime Authority reinforces "the importance of taking special care with the activities that take place near the bars of the ports, especially with children, as they are places where the currents are very strong".
