Nelson Conceição was one of the winners at the International Portuguese Music Awards

The Chamber of Faro congratulated the musician Nelson Conceição «for bringing to Faro another important international musical award», after the accordionist from Bordeira received the award for "best instrumental performance", at the gala “International Portuguese Music Awards” (IPMA), which took place on August 2, in New Bradford, United States.

The prize was awarded for the theme “Mister Machado”, composed by Nelson Conceição to honor his first accordion teacher, the Estoense Joaquim Machado.

«The local authority sees in this award the recognition of the exceptional career of Nelson Conceição, a musician and teacher who has given his all for the worldwide affirmation of the accordion and of the Algarve's musical traditions, with the folklore of Bordeira as a backdrop», he describes .

For Rogério Bacalhau, president of the Faro local authority, who issued an official congratulatory note, «the constancy and virtuosity [of Nelson Conceição], long recognized in the Algarve and in the country, now receive another international distinction that is just cause for pride for the winner and for all the people of Algarve».

«Therefore, the local authority conveys warm congratulations and its thanks for all that it has done for the promotion of the Algarve's musical traditions and for the new artistic paths that it has traced from them», wrote Rogério Bacalhau.

Nelson Conceição was born in Bordeira, a town in Faro with great accordion players. The musician has had an inspired and dynamic path from his childhood to the present, embracing a remarkable diversity of genres that allows a symbiosis between ancestors and contemporaries through the exploration of relationships between fado and tango, corridinho and classical music, or even traditions/ charolas and jazz manouche/gipsy as you can hear on his latest album “Descobrindo-me”.

He has a degree in Music Education and a postgraduate degree in Popular Music Studies at FCSH, Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He teaches music in several locations in the Algarve and Alentejo.
