Demand for bicycles grew 93% during confinement

The word “bicycle” was the most searched for in all OLX categories during the confinement period.

The demand for bicycles grew 93% during the confinement, reveals a study by OLX, based on data available on the platform.

The study analyzes the evolution of demand (contacts made to advertisements), supply (new and active advertisements) and average price of bicycles and related accessories. The findings now presented examine the first six months of 2020, including the period of confinement and de-confinement in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic.

On the supply side, the month of May, with 14,091 new announcements, was the main highlight of the 1st semester, recording a 43% increase compared to the previous month.

Another of the main conclusions is that Lisbon (15%), Porto (10%) and Setúbal stand out as the regions with the highest demand for this equipment.

In addition, the word “bicycle” was the most searched word in all OLX categories during the confinement period.

The study also points out that the average price for bicycles and related accessories grew 29% between January (107€) and May (138€) this year.

“These numbers allow us to infer with some certainty that the bicycle was the Portuguese people's preferred equipment for exercising during quarantine. These data objectively confirm what many had been suspecting, because I have often heard over the past few months that they seemed to be riding more bicycles on the street”, justifies Andreia Pacheco, Brand Manager at OLX Portugal.

“This equipment allows you to carry out the usual physical exercise without transgressing any of the rules or recommendations imposed by the national authorities, so this sudden and quite significant growth in our platform turns out to be natural”, he adds.
