The University Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHUA) received 30 invasive mechanical ventilators, which will reinforce the installed capacity of Intensive Care beds, which currently number 29 in Algarve hospitals.

Jamila Madeira, Assistant Secretary of State and Health, was this Monday at the Hospital de Faro to point out “the delivery of another 30 invasive mechanical fans, to reinforce this capacity, in addition to the 30 that were donated by the Algarve's municipalities to CHUA”.

20 of these ventilators will stay at the Hospital de Faro and the other ten go to the Hospital de Portimão, revealed the member of the Government.

These equipments arrived from China and are part of the set of 952 fans that came from this country "on 14 flights chartered by the Ministry of Health".

“So far, and comparing with December 2019, we can say that we have already doubled the installed capacity in ventilated beds”, stressed Jamila Madeira.

With the investment already made and what is yet to be done, Portugal should «reach December 2020 with an installed capacity, on average, of 9,4 ICU beds with ventilation, per XNUMX inhabitants».

"In this way, we are very substantially close to the European average and we will try to reach that goal by the end of 2021", he added.

Jamila Madeira stresses that, «regardless of the fact that we have always been far short of the installed capacity in terms of use, we used all our potential to reinforce and work with professionals to give a good response».

“Furthermore, it is important to underline that the reinforcement of human resources has taken place throughout the pandemic, but also within the supplementary budget and was signaled under the summer reinforcement plan, with an increase in nursing and nursing capacity. doctors, who are waiting for the availability of these professionals to come now to the Algarve», said the Deputy Secretary of State and Health.

The official also stated that her visit to CHUA today "signifies recognition for the work that has been done here, in CHUA and in the region, in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic operation."

“Yes, we faced a pandemic. Yes, we handled it well. Yes, we faced it with the effort, merit and commitment of all health professionals and a particularly committed board of directors», he said.

«The message we want to continue to convey is that the Algarve is a safe region. They can continue to visit us and can continue to count on a reinforced NHS, which is particularly strong, and in which all the investments that were planned before this pandemic have not stopped”, he concluded.
