Petition demands closure of Secondary António Aleixo for fear of Covid-19

Parents claim that students from the Liceu de Portimão were in contact with students from schools linked to confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the Algarve

Um undersigned requesting the closure of the Poeta António Aleixo Secondary School, due to the threat of the coronavirus, was launched this Monday by parents of students from this establishment.

The document, which was placed in a online platform, comes one day after it has been confirmed the first case of Covid-19 in the Algarve, a 16-year-old student at Manuel Teixeira Gomes Secondary School.

This morning, the mother of the young woman, a teacher at EB 2,3 José Buisel, also in Portimão and from the same group of schools, was also diagnosed as having been infected with the new coronavirus.

These two establishments were, however, closed until at least the 20th. Now, there are parents who want the former Liceu de Portimão to also close, taking into account that the students of this establishment «were in contact with the students of the infected school in didactic activities».

The parents allege that the General Directorate of Health, to whom the undersigned is addressed, only agrees to shut down Poet António Aleixo "if someone is contaminated, which is absurd."

Local authority source, contacted by Sul Informação, said that the closing of other educational establishments will only be considered from the moment there is confirmation of someone infected.

«Better safe than sorry!», they conclude.

Until today, the 9th, in the middle of the afternoon, the petition was signed by 34 people.
