16-year-old teenager is the 1st case of Covid-19 in the Algarve, Secondary in Portimão closed

Young student and mother are already in a hospital in Lisbon

A 16-year-old girl, a student at the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Secondary School, in Portimão, is the first confirmed case of Covid-19 in the Algarve, according to Sul Informação. The educational establishment will be closed for cleaning and quarantine.

The closing of other schools in Portimão is being considered, as the girl's mother, who is also awaiting the results of the analyzes she has already done, is a teacher, while her two sisters attend other schools.

According to what our newspaper found, the young woman, as well as her mother, are already in a hospital in Lisbon.

The family, made up of the parents and three daughters, had been in Italy during the Carnival holidays, where the girl, and possibly her mother, had been contaminated.

Isilda Gomes, president of the Portimão Chamber and head of Civil Protection in the municipality, told the Sul Informação which, at 17:00 pm, will hold a meeting on this situation in Covid-19 with the Health Delegate of Portimão. Stressing that the measures to be taken "are always decided by the Health authorities", the mayor expressed the Municipality's willingness to collaborate "in whatever is necessary".

«It was expected that, sooner or later, we would have a case in the Algarve, now we just have to take the necessary measures, always in contact with the Health authorities», he added.

In official terms, so far there are already 30 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus across the country.
