Rui Rio was re-elected this Saturday as president of the PSD, by 53% of the votes against 47% of Luís Montenegro, in the second round of elections for the presidency of that party.
In the Algarve, Rui Rio's candidacy, with 557 votes, got almost double that of Luís Montenegro (281 votes), he told the Sul Informação source of the PSD.
In terms of percentage, Rio got, this time, 66,5% of the votes of the Algarve Social Democrats (last Saturday, in the first round, it was 59,66%).
Montenegro even saw its percentage decrease, in the district of Faro, having gone from 34,73%, on January 13th, to 33,5% of this second round.
Incidentally, this time, the former parliamentary leader of the Social Democrats did not win in any of the Algarve councils.
As had already happened in the first round, Montenegro lost again in Monchique, the land where its regional representative, Rui André, is mayor. Montenegro got 30% there, against 70% of Rio's votes.
In this second round, the municipality where the re-elected leader obtained its highest percentage in the entire Algarve region was Alcoutim (87,5% against 12,5%), followed by Castro Marim (86,7% against 13,3 %). Interestingly, both municipalities are linked to the regional representative of Rui Rio, since Francisco Amaral was president of the Alcoutim Chamber, a position he now holds in Castro Marim.
The place where Rio got its least expressive vote was Silves (52,9%), council where, in the first round and then with three candidates, Montenegro was the winner. This time, the former parliamentary leader of the PSD only got 47,1%.
This is the first time that there has been a second round of direct elections in the PSD, due to a change in the statutes. The new direction will only be sworn in at the congress on February 7, 8 and 9, in Viana do Castelo.
