If all militants voted as in the Algarve, Rui Rio would have been re-elected president of the PSD

Results in the municipalities of the regional representatives of Rio and Montenegro were interesting

If all the social-democratic militants voted as in the Algarve, Rui Rio would have been re-elected, this Saturday, as president of the PSD, without the need for a second round, reveal the data from that party's website.

The fact is that, in the 16 municipalities of the Algarve region, the current leader obtained 59,66% of the votes cast in the elections for that party's leadership, a number well above the 47.62% obtained at the national level.

Taking into account the national result, there will be a second round, with Rui Rio and Luís Montenegro, who today won 40.24% of the militants' choices.

In the Algarve, the scenario was quite different, with Rio getting much more than the 50% needed to avoid the second round. Interestingly, the current president of the PSD won the elections in 14 of the 16 councils. The only exceptions were Faro and Silves, where the winner was Luís Montenegro.

In the Algarve, in addition to Rio (59,66%), Montenegro secured 34,73% of the militants' votes, while Miguel Pinto Luz stayed with a meager 5,6%. In fact, in four municipalities, the deputy mayor of Cascais did not obtain a single preference from the militants: Aljezur, Castro Marim, Vila do Bispo and Vila Real de Santo António.

Curious are the numbers obtained by the leaders of the two main candidates, in their own municipalities: Rui André, from Monchique, who is the president of Luís Montenegro, saw his candidate relegated to second place in the preferences of Monchique social democratic voters. In this municipality, Montenegro reached only 28%, against 60% in Rio (and 12% in Pinto Luz).

Very different was the scenario in Castro Marim, where Francisco Amaral is mayor, or in Alcoutim, where he used to be: in the first municipality, Rio obtained an expressive 92,31% of the votes, against 7,69% for Montenegro. In Alcoutim, it was once again the current leader to win this first round (64,29% against 35,71%).

Rui Rio got its highest vote for Castro Marim (92,31%) and Luís Montenegro in Faro (51,89%). In Aljezur, the votes, which were few, were divided by 50% for each of those candidates. The highest vote in the Algarve for Miguel Pinto Luz was obtained in Portimão, with 12,28%.

The voting for the PSD president took place throughout the day of Saturday, across the country, with the polls closed at 20:XNUMX.

The second round will take place on Saturday, January 18th. This is the first time that there has been a second round of direct elections in the PSD. The new direction will only be sworn in at the congress on February 7, 8 and 9, in Viana do Castelo.
