Cristina Branco and tribute to Chico Buarque open “appetite” for MED

For the organization of MED, this initiative aims to provide the public with a list of cultural activities, with music as the main focus

There will be eight artistic moments that serve as an aperitif for another edition of the MED Festival in Loulé. There will be shows from João Friar, de Cristina Branco and even a tribute to Chico Buarque. The first is already this Thursday, January 30th.

The initiative is called "Off MED" and integrates the Cineteatro Louletano programming.

The first of these moments takes place this Thursday, January 30, at 21 pm, in the Auditorium of Solar da Música Nova, with the presentation of the new work by the Algarve accordionist João Frade, in another section of “Conversas à Quinta” .

Within the scope of the Al-Mutamid Music Festival, which this year marks its 20th anniversary, another “Off MED” event will take place at the Cineteatro Louletano. Wayam Ensemble takes the stage on February 8th, at 21 pm, to present a program of music and dances from the Maghreb and the Middle East.

It is also in this concert hall that celebrates 90 years of “restlessness” that, on March 2, at 18 pm, the Algarve Central project – Cultural Networking Program will be publicly presented, with the involvement of 30 local authorities: Loulé, Albufeira, Faro, Olhão and Tavira.

Under the theme of “Culture of Sustainability”, shows of recognized international value, creations by Portuguese artists, the involvement of local communities, deepening the collaborative practices between the various councils are planned.

The tribute to Chico Buarque “Who has seen you, who has seen you” takes place on April 21, at 21 pm, at Cineteatro Louletano, another moment imbued in the spirit of MED.

It is a tribute to one of the icons of Brazilian Popular Music, performed by prestigious artists Marcus Lima (voice and guitar) and Thaís Motta (voice), who present in this concert, exclusively in the south of the country, - and on the eve of the the honoree's arrival in Lisbon, on April 25, to receive the Camões Prize -, a repertoire dedicated to the great classics of Buarque.

On May 12, at 21 pm, the inaugural show of the Algarve Central network programming will take place at the Cineteatro: “The presence of ants”.

In a renewed formation in trio (Sara Vidal on voice and timbre, André Cardoso on classical guitar and Manuel Maio on violin, mandolin and voice), this musical project approaches traditional and popular sounds with influences from jazz, classical music and world music, here in an intimate and engaging environment.

Loulé's oral traditions will be highlighted in “A Voz da Terra”, on May 23, at 17 pm, on the Cineteatro stage.

In another session “From the flavors of culture”, Tradition, Memory and Heritage once again set the tone for this meeting of knowledge, affections and flavors, in an informal and intimate environment. Starting from the CD anthology of “Oral Heritage of the Municipality of Loulé”, by Idália Farinho, Maria Aliete Galhoz and Isabel Cardigos, a live musical show is presented, with the participation of several informants who were involved in the collections carried out, accompanied by by tasting various local flavors.

At the Solar da Música Nova Auditorium, on June 6, at 21 pm, there will be another “Off MED” moment, this time as part of the “Ilustres Descobertas” cycle: solo instrumental project Filho da Mãe&Cláudia Guerreiro – Rui's alter-ego Carvalho, accompanied by Cláudia Guerreiro's real-time digital drawing.

In the final stretch of this “Off MED”, on June 19, at 21 pm, Cristina Branco will present her latest work, “Eva”.

Current Portuguese music is the basis explored in a concept that was worked on in a residency in Loulé (Solar da Música Nova Auditorium) and in Copenhagen (Denmark) last year. This artist, moreover, has already been part of the MED Festival poster.

For the organization of MED, this initiative aims to provide the public with a list of cultural activities, with music as the main focus, and which will allow viewers to experience a little of what the MED Festival is and experience this spirit beyond the festival side , in a more intimate component.

On the other hand, the MED label in these shows is also a way to promote the World Music and the multiculturality present in other artistic manifestations such as plastic arts, cinema, poetry or theatre.
