Cante has been a World Heritage Site for five years

There is no lack of initiatives to mark the date

Cante Alentejano celebrates this Wednesday, November 27, five years of election as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

To mark the date, there will be several initiatives, spread across several Alentejo counties. In Serpa, which is the representative community of Cante, the 5th edition of CanteFest ends today, an event that the Sul Informação already made known.

To close the initiative, there will be a session at the Municipal Cineteatro from 18:00. In addition, a show is planned that will bring together groups from the municipality and pianist Ariel Rodriguez.

In turn, in Castro Verde, the celebrations began at 11:00 am, with “O Cante da Escola goes to Praça”, a moment that brings together pre-school and 1st cycle children in the municipality.

The night will also be dedicated to singing, with the debut in Castro Verde of the group “Cantares do Campo Branco”, formed by six musicians from the municipality, who were born in the village after a challenge from the City Council to perform at the Casa Cultural Week of the Alentejo from Toronto.

In addition, they will take the stage of the Municipal Cineteatro “As Camponesas” by Castro Verde and “Os Ganhões”, in a concert that will take place from 21 pm, and which will pay homage to this greatest feature of Alentejo's musical culture through a repertoire composed of fashions from the Traditional Songbook.

Also within the scope of the commemorations, on 30 November, a Meeting of Coral Groups from the municipality is held. The initiative is scheduled for 16 pm, at the Municipal Amphitheater, and, in addition to the performance of choral groups, it will also include the inauguration of a commemorative photographic installation.

Finally, to Beja, the district capital, the “Sing to Entardecer” route is marked, starting at 17:30 pm. There will be shows by 10 choral groups, spread across five churches in the city.

It was at 11:18 am, French time, on 27 November 2014 that the Alentejo cante was declared a World Heritage Site, at a ceremony in Paris.

The successful application, from this typical corner of Alentejo, was at the time led by the Câmara de Serpa, with the contribution of the Regional Tourism Authority of Alentejo and Ribatejo, Casa do Alentejo, in Lisbon, Confraria do Cante Alentejano and Fashion – Cante Alentejano Association.
