Work focuses on the year 1760

The book “A Dama da Luz” by writer José Estêvão Cruz, produced by Editora Guadiana, will be presented on October 24th (Thursday), at 18 pm, at the Vicente Campinas Municipal Library, in Vila Real de Santo António .

This is the second volume of the “Border Blocks” trilogy. The first, entitled “Águas Vivas de Levante”, was published in 2015.

This series of books seeks to romance the conflicts that have existed in the fishing communities on both sides of the Portuguese-Spanish border, Castro Marim, Vila Real de Santo António, Ayamonte, Canela, La Higuerita and Redondela, when the borders were porous, the bollards of sand were highly productive and inhabited on both banks of the river Guadiana, Portuguese, Spaniards, Catalans, Valencians, Christians and Moors, free men and slaves, in a harmony of thatched huts.

In “Águas Vivas de Levante” the author discusses the way in which two exiles arrived in Castro Marim on the day of the 1755 earthquake and escaped the penalty imposed on them by the Inquisition, after discovering that the records had been destroyed and providing assistance to the affected population .

In the current work “A Dama da Luz”, centered on the year 1760, we see Mariana and Brandão found a small fishing company and exploration of salt marshes, in the village of Castro Marim and in Monte Gordo, and we witnessed the relationships on the porous border of the river, where the authorities exercised a lukewarm control, in a kind of cross-border no man's land.

At the same time, the Enlightenment begins to blow winds of change in Europe, with the rise of mercantilism and the bourgeoisie, and the foundation of a new city near the mouth of the Guadiana is expected.

This is the fifth novel by José Estêvão Cruz that began with “Sol e Sal”, (Viprensa), 1996. He later published “Xá e Luís na circumstance”, (Viprensa), 2014; “Águas Vivas de Levante”, (Editora Guadiana), 2015; and “The Mysterious Soviet Ulianova”, (Vipress) 2018.
