The V International Poetry Meeting in the South of Olhão starts on the 18th of October and will honor Walt Whitman, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, Laurence Ferlinghetti and Jorge de Sena.
The event, curated by Fernando Cabrita and running until the 27th, will celebrate the bicentenary of Whitman's birth and the centenary of the births of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, Laurence Ferlinghetti and Jorge de Sena.
The José Mariano Gago Municipal Library welcomes, on the 18th, the beginning of a program full of initiatives: the opening show will take place at 17:00 with Nanook and Rogério Cão, followed by the inauguration (18:00) with the presence of official entities, guest poets and artists. The library in Olho also welcomes the presentation of the new collection of authors Poesia a Sul – Edifício Nautilus, by Inma Luna, Ventos, by Chi Trung and Missa Branca, by Fernando Cabrita.
On this day, which will be a party, it also opens a collective exhibition of painting and drawing by Michael Augustin, Hans Wap, Tineke Storteboom and Paulo Gago and there will be a dinner in honor of the poets celebrated in this edition, followed by poetry on the benches of the garden of Avenida da República.
The night of October 18th continues at Re-Criativa República 14, at 22:30, when Poesia a Sul will be twinned with the Festival de La Lyre Emigrée (Russia), Edita – Festival Ibero-American de la Edición, la Poesia y las Artes (Spain) and with the Pierre le Grand Foundation (Belgium/Russia). Here, Jeffrey Gaylord Carter's painting exhibition to the Poets of the World will also be presented.
The Municipal Museum – Compromisso Marítimo Building welcomes, at 23 pm, the inauguration of the exhibitions by Jill Stot and Augusto Thassio S. Gómez De Los Infantes. The first night dedicated to culture in the city ends as it begins: with poetry and music.
Over the next nine days, the V International Poesia a Sul Meeting offers more than fifty proposals, including book presentations, recitals, lectures, poetry recitations, film sessions, musical shows, conversations with some of the best poets of today at the level world tour or tours in the Ria Formosa.
In addition to the various stages in the city of Olhão - Museum, Library, Auditorium and Municipal Markets, Ria Formosa, Re-Criativa República 14 or Sociedade Recreativa Progresso Olhanense -, also the parishes and schools of the municipality of Olhão and other places in the Algarve, from the country and even from Spain are visited by poetry.
Thus, there are also activities within the scope of Poetry in the South in Faro, Beja, Culatra Island or Seville.
