Empty or not, camping at Praia de Faro goes to works on October 1st

Rogério Bacalhau reveals that users told him that they would not be able to leave the space "before December 2020", a claim denied by the municipality

The works at the Praia de campsite Faro will start on October 1st, whether or not the current occupants have removed their belongings from this council space, he assured the Sul Informação the mayor of Faro.

Rogério Bacalhau told our newspaper that he plans to take possession of the space no later than the first day of October, as was planned, and that all the necessary procedures for the work to advance are fulfilled, including obtaining a visa from the Court of Auditors.

“Users were notified a year ago – we are not talking about a week, a month or two. A year ago, they were notified that they had to leave in September. We held meetings and made ourselves available to help with the exit, if necessary», said Rogério Bacalhau.

"If they don't take things out by the end of September, it's because they didn't want to, as they had enough time to organize themselves," said the mayor of Faro.

So far, no request for help has been made by users of the space. Thus, the municipality of Faro assumes that 'what is agreed' will be fulfilled, which is the delivery of the key 'until September 30th, for us, on October 1st, to take possession of a space that is ours, that is public, that it's municipal and that's what we're going to do. On the 1st of October, we will start the work, we will assemble the light and water meters for the work and we will have everything else turned off».

It remains to be seen whether the current occupants of the space, organized in the Users and Friends Association of the Praia de Camping Park Faro, will even leave space. Because, according to Rogério Bacalhau, the users – who have always manifested themselves against the fact that they have to leave space and against the mandatory rotation advocated by the Chamber -, sent him a letter saying that "they had some difficulty in leaving" and that they would not be able to vacate the space "before December 2020".

“The answer we gave them was no, it couldn't be, therefore, on October 1st we will start the works”, assured the Farense mayor.

The termination of the lending contract signed in 2014 between the City Council and the Association of Users and Friends of Praia de Camping Park Faro, which framed the use of space by the second entity, was made official on September 3, 2018.

At the time, and under a proposal approved unanimously in a Chamber meeting, it was stipulated that the lending contract will end on the 15th of next September. In other words, users of the former Camping Park will have another fifteen days, after the end of the contract, to remove their things from there.

As for the work itself, everything is covered. The public tender launched on September 3, 2018 resulted in the choice of a contractor, with which a contract has already been signed to carry out a work that will cost "in the order of 430 thousand euros".

“This contract was submitted to the Court of Auditors and has already been approved. The contractor is just waiting for the date of October 1st to start", assured Rogério Bacalhau, in his statements to the Sul Informação.
