Recipes, tips, knowledge, stories and sayings return to Tavira Market

Project «People of the Market» is carried out for the second consecutive year

The second edition of the “Gentes do Mercado” project, this year with the theme “Recipes, tips, knowledge, stories and proverbs”, will take place on the 6th and 7th of September, as part of the seventh edition of the Mediterranean Diet Fair.

This is a socio-cultural dynamization project for the Municipal Market of Tavira, which takes place for the second year in a row, «results from a dynamic process of valuing the “knowledge” of market sellers, who are the protagonists and main recipients of this project». highlights the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, which organizes the initiative, together with the International Association of Paremiology and Resmalhar – Cultural Association for Local Sustainability.

The promotion of “People of the Market” will take place on the mornings of the 6th and 7th, between 10 am and 11 am, and represents «the culmination of a work developed in close collaboration with the people who make the market, its sellers, who were invited to share their knowledge about the products they sell, whether they are recipes, tips, stories, etc».

The dynamization will be carried out through a market-oriented route, under the responsibility of the International Association of Paremiology, and which will consist of «informal conversations with sellers and users, through proverbial expressions of oral tradition, associated with the Mediterranean Diet, at the same time as a digital brochure “Recipes, tips, knowledge, stories and proverbs” is made known, where the knowledge shared by all these people will be presented», adds the Regional Directorate.

The route also features various animation moments performed by two characters alluding to market life, in a performance by actresses Catarina Bernardino and Marta La Piedad, promoted by Resmalhar – Cultural Association for Local Sustainability (also responsible for the project's visual identity).

Through this initiative, its promoters intend to «promote the Market as a meeting place par excellence for the local community», as «the best place to purchase vegetables, fruits and vegetables, meat and fish or other fresh products, or for a exchange of the most varied knowledge, such as that special recipe that almost no one knows how to make, or that little story linked to the hard past of life in the countryside or at sea».

This is a project that also has the support of the Municipality of Tavira and the collaboration of photographer Vítor Pina.

“Gentes do Mercado” is a project that aims to contribute to highlighting the importance of local communities in valuing cultural heritage, in line with the principles of the Convention of Faro, as it tries to reflect and understand cultural heritage as a factor of approximation, dialogue, social cohesion and an increasingly inclusive citizenship.
