Francisco Amaral's victory was "punishment for the opposition"

PSD/CDS-PP coalition got 60% of the votes

A “punishment for the opposition, which for a year and a half was only able to hinder”. This is how the social democrat Francisco Amaral analyzes the result of the Interim Elections this Sunday, in Castro Marim, which gave him back the majority lost in 2017 and reinforced his position as president of the Chamber.

This time, the Castro Marim + Humano coalition, which brings together PSD and CDS-PP, achieved a result close to 60%, which allowed it to elect three councilors out of five. Thus, in addition to President Francisco Amaral and deputy Filomena Sintra, the ruling coalition now has a third councilor, in this case, Victor Rosa.

The PS has two councilors, the same ones it had managed to elect in the 2017 Local Elections. In addition to Célia Brito, who was already part of the executive, Vítor Esteves was elected.

The CDU, which presented a candidacy led by Nuno Osório, could not get a place in the municipal executive.

Also outside is the Castro Marim Primeira movement, of former mayor José Estevens, who left the PSD and ran for independence. In 2017, Estevens managed to be elected as councilor, but ended up not appearing for votes in these Interim Elections for not having the financial conditions to proceed with a new independent candidacy.

For Francisco Amaral, this Sunday “justice was done”. "The population realized what happened in the last year and a half" and punished the opposition, believes the re-elected mayor.

Today's elections were only for the City Council, with no changes at the level of the Municipal Assembly or Parish Councils. Thus, the PSD/CDS-PP coalition continues to lack a majority in AM.

Even so, Francisco Amaral believes that today's result will give him "other conditions to govern in Castro Marim."
