Algarve needs 66 doctors for summer reinforcement

Only pediatricians are needed 10

The Algarve needs 66 doctors to ensure the summer reinforcement. The Regional Health Administration (ARS) of the Algarve released, this Friday, June 21, the list of needs in the region and it will now be up to doctors to apply for vacancies .

According to ARS Algarve, there is a need to hire 10 anesthesiologists (five for the Hospital de Portimão and five for the Hospital de Faro) three cardiologists for the Hospital of Faro, a pediatric cardiologist, also for the hospital of Faro, four gynecologists/obstetricians, for the Hospital of Faro, and two for Portimão.

In terms of General and Family Medicine, six vacancies were opened for Basic Emergency Services (VRSA, Loulé, Albufeira and Lagos) and two for the Barlavento Health Centers Group (ACES).

Five specialists in Internal Medicine, two for the Hospital de Faro and three for the Hospital de Portimão, and two nephrologists, three urologists and three neurosurgeons, for the Hospital de Faro.

For both hospitals, ophthalmologists are needed (two for Faro, two for Portimão), oncologists (two for Faro, one for Portimão), orthopedists (five for Faro, three for Portimão), and pediatricians (four for Faro and six to Portimão).

This exceptional model of temporary mobility of medical personnel, regulated by an order published in the Diário da República on 6 June, is in force until 30 September.

According to ARS Algarve, "with this measure, the Ministry of Health intends to reinforce, during the summer period of 2019, medical assistance in the Algarve region, without compromising the regular and normal functioning of other health services and establishments".

The entity explains that "this mobility model streamlines the procedure for placing medical workers, particularly in situations where they are essential for adequate coverage of care, improve the constitution of emergency scales and increase medical assistance, resorting to mobility , namely the partial mobility provided for by law”.

Since 2016, the Government has issued orders to increase the number of doctors in the Algarve during the summer, but tenders have been deserted. In 2019, to convince clinicians to accept temporary mobility, ARS Algarve will try to find free temporary accommodation for doctors, "according to local availability".

A measure that does not meet consensus. Roque da Cunha, secretary general of the Independent Union of Physicians, in statements to Sul Informação, considered it "political marketing". Also PSD deputy José Carlos Barros it has already gone public to say that the Ministry of Health is "insisting on the error".
